Budspells
Inna Sences Ep.

Aussie dub stakes its claim with mixed results.

Nu-dub is a genre more readily associated with our Kiwi cousins. They've embraced the style and had chart success with acts like Salmonella Dub and Fat Freddy's Drop. Incidentally, Budspells were taken under the wing of Salmonella Dub and this Ep is the result.

Despite its dub credentials, the influence of hip hop is never far away on 'Inna Sences' from the beats to the raps and samples you can tell that Budspells are informed by a hip hop philosophy. That the two standout tracks feature Sydney hip hop mainstays, Hyjak and Bonez just goes to further demonstrate this link. It's a happy marriage though, the beats of hip hop working in unison with the sonic space provided by dubbed out production. You get the feeling that this is an Ep that demonstrated but does not cash in on their potential.

The album has a distinctly Australian flavour courtesy of some didgeridoo samples and Austalian voices offering the rhymes. I think this Ep would have benefited from a larger production budget, it sounds at times a bit well budget. That being said, there are some positive moments, 'No Delay' benefits from production by Bonez and the following track, 'Fevel Styles' from a solid rap by Hyjak. I'd reckon you'll be hearing more from Budspells and given a bit of time they may well do big things.
